New Student Orientation
TCC launched New Student Orientation in the summer of 2011 to help students learn how to succeed in their educational careers at Tulsa Community College. TCC faculty and staff identified student barriers to persistence by conducting focus groups and other research. Based on these data, TCC developed the New Student Orientation to reduce or eliminate the most common barriers to persistence and graduation that students encounter. Student panelists, presenters and tour guides teach new students and help them adjust to TCC’s college environment. Students learn how to plan and finance their college education, how to handle their student records and accounts, and how to interact with faculty and other students to succeed in all their courses. Students who attended the orientation demonstrated better performance in their classes overall and had higher rates of fall-to-spring persistence that those who did not attend. Therefore, TCC expanded New Student Orientation in the summer of 2012 and again in the summer of 2013 to reach even more students.
