Goody Goody: President Honors Mark Frank with Award

Tulsa Community College President and CEO Leigh B. Goodson, Ph.D., started the first week of the semester with a splash on Jan. 11, ambushing Assistant Professor Mark Frank’s Theatre Practice class with the first Goody Award of 2017.

Frank was nominated for the award for initiating the Oklahoma State Thespian Festival hosted by TCC last Spring, and scheduled again in February. Last year’s festival brought together more than 400 high school students from across the state to audition for colleges and universities in one place. Frank coordinated more than 80 workshops for the students and ensured that more than 30 schools from across the state and region were able to meet students, conduct auditions and view their work. As a testament to his efforts and the growth of the festival, more than 1,000 students are expected to attend next month’s festival.

“I’m extremely surprised,” Frank said. “I had no idea this award even existed!”

Goodson initiated Good Job Awards or "Goodys" last year to be given to individuals and departments who go over and above to do their jobs in the best way possible. The first award was given out in September to Director of Financial Aid Karen Jeffers and the whole Financial Aid team.

Dean of Visual and Performing Arts Kelly Clark added that Frank also stepped up to be the first Faculty Department Chair for the School of Visual and Performing Arts, and that under his guidance, the Theatre department has grown from 12 to 65 majors in three years.

The students in the Theatre Practice class cheered as Frank received the award, and posed for a photo with Goodson and Frank. As part of the celebration Goodson provided cookies to the class to thank them for their support of Frank, the Theatre department and TCC as a whole.

If you know of a TCC employee deserving of consideration for a Goody, you can send a nomination to President's Assistant Carrie Bateson. Include the names of your nominees and a description of how they’ve gone above and beyond to reach students and support the College’s mission. Then you'll have to keep an eye out for Goodson; Goodys are given away several times each year, but they aren’t awarded on any set schedule, so there's no way to know when one might come your direction.
