From 'South Tulsa' to 'Regional': Fair changes name to encompass growing crowd

An event that began in 2005 at Tulsa Community College has grown so large that the name has changed to better reflect the population it serves. The former South Tulsa Regional Transition Institute has been renamed the Regional Transition Fair to encompass high school and middle school students with disabilities from across the Tulsa region. The Regional Transition Fair is 6 to 8 p.m. March 13 in the Student Union of the TCC Southeast Campus.

The fair gives students with disabilities and their parents information about transitioning from high school to college or employment. TCC and Broken Arrow and Jenks schools partner to offer this event which connects students with disabilities to local universities, community agencies and resource programs.

In 2009, the U.S. Disability Statistics reported an estimated 33.6 percent of people with disabilities with a high school diploma or equivalent were employed compared to an estimated 41.5 percent employment rate of those who had some college or an associate degree.

In 2011, approximately 200 people and 38 representatives from colleges universities and community agencies attended.
