Changing Your Life Begins with Women in Transition and College

Thi Nguyen started over at the age of 33 by returning to college and a new career after she married and moved to Tulsa from Vietnam.  After two years at TCC, she started classes at the OU-Tulsa College of Pharmacy this fall.  The 2013 Women in Transition scholarship winner will share her story and hopes to help other women at this year’s Women in Transition workshop.

The 10th annual Women in Transition workshop allows women to explore options in returning to college and gives opportunities to meet with local educational organizations and financial-aid advisers.  A new job, updated work skills, career advancement and more money are among the top reasons why women go to college after several years away from formal education.

The Women in Transition workshop is Thursday, Oct. 3.  There will be two identical sessions with one in the morning and one in the evening.

  • 8:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m., OSU-Tulsa, North Hall, 700 N. Greenwood Ave.
  • 4:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m., Tulsa Community College, Southeast Campus, Student Union, 10300 E. 81st Street.

Preregistration fee is $5; registration at the door is $8.  Women in Transition can waive a limited number of registration fees for those unable to pay, but advance registration is required.

Participants will hear women’s inspirational stories about how they managed to succeed at attending college while managing jobs and family responsibilities.  Plus, they will learn about financial-aid options and take a computerized career assessment. Refreshments are provided.  Three $500 scholarships will be awarded at the conclusion of each session.

Featured speakers are: Vicki Jones, director of the Tulsa area TRiO Educational Opportunity Center, and Ashley Mellor, Financial Aid Coordinator at OSU-Tulsa. Plus, Kasty France, Starr Mayo, and Thi Nguyen, the 2013 Women in Transition $1,000 scholarship winner, will give testimonials of their experiences returning to college.

Women in Transition is a coalition of area universities, colleges and women’s organizations. Participating organizations include Tulsa Chapter of American Association of University Women, Educational Opportunity Center, OSU-Tulsa, Tulsa City-County Library, and Tulsa Community College.
