Employment Outlook

Employment is expected to increase much faster than average, and job opportunities are expected to be good and increasingly growing. There are many levels of pharmacy technicians within this occupation field. Employment of pharmacy technicians is expected to increase by 32 percent from 2010 to 2020, much faster than the average for all occupations. Because of the rapidly changing health care system, job descriptions and educational requirements of pharmacy technicians are quickly changing, causing a need for increased responsibilities, higher education, legal knowledge, and continuing education. More states as well as pharmacy institutions are accepting national certification as a measure of the knowledge base of pharmacy technicians. Positive aspects of these changes include a wider range of jobs available, bonuses, salary increases and better benefits for technicians.
