Metro Writing Center
Need writing help?
Whatever your skill level, you can benefit from a conference with a writing specialist, who will consult with you at any stage of your writing. Plan ahead to make an appointment early enough in the writing process to allow for revision and ensure the availability of a specialist. You can make between one to three visits per paper.
What can we help you with?
We can help you with everything from paragraphs and essays to research papers, as well as letters, college applications and resumes.
Stumped on grammar and mechanics?
You can visit us for help with particular grammar and/or punctuation issues. You do not have to have a writing assignment to do this.
Just getting started on a paper?
Have writer’s block? We will help you with brainstorming, free writing and a variety of inventive techniques to help you discover your own ideas. We will also make sure you know how to form a topic sentence and a thesis statement.
Have your assignment?
Together, we will look at planning, rhetorical strategies and outlining.
Working on a rough draft?
After reviewing your rough draft, we will help you build on and apply your knowledge of the writing process to the assignment.
What about fixing or polishing my draft before I turn it in?
Although we will not write, edit or proofread your paper for you, and are not a one-stop, “fix-it” shop, we can help you develop the writing, editing and proofreading skills you need to confidently express your ideas in writing.
What about MLA and APA documentation styles?
We can help you with MLA (Modern Language Association) and APA (American Psychological Association) documentation styles and requirements.
What do I bring to my consultation?
Bring your instructors assignment or requirement sheet (if you are given one) along with your rough draft—typed and double-spaced—and notes or any other work you have done for the assignment. Please print your paper before your meeting. Again, if you are having trouble getting started, bring ideas and/or questions you may have, and we will help.
How can I schedule a free appointment with a writing specialist?
Using your MyTCC e-mail account, you can e-mail us at firstname.lastname@example.org; you can also call us at 918.595.7240, or come by the Writing Center Help Desk in the Philips Building (MP 200) to make your appointment for a 30-minute writing consultation.
We can sometimes accommodate walk-ins, but appointments are best. If you cannot keep your appointment, please notify us at least one hour ahead in person, by phone or e-mail. You must print your paper before your conference. If you are 10 minutes late and we are busy, we can assign your time to another student. If you are more than 15 minutes late, we can cancel your appointment.
Does the Writing Center offer online consultations?
No, we do not. We find that face-to-face conferencing works best for both you and us.
Where can I find help if the Metro Writing Center is closed?
You can go to the Metro Writing Center Blackboard Site (which is still under construction). There you will find useful handouts on everything from developmental writing concerns to tips on research papers to MLA and APA documentation style handouts. Handouts are also in paper form in the Writing Center. Our site also links to other writing centers around the country that have terrific resources and information on all kinds of writing.
