Advancement via Individual Determination

ADVANCEMENT VIA INDIVIDUAL DETERMINATION (AVID)
Tulsa Community College (TCC) has a very exciting partnership with Tulsa Public Schools (TPS)!
As a result of the partnership, TCC has agreed to refer qualified applicants to TPS for AVID tutoring positions.
The AVID program seeks to place college students as tutors in middle and high school classrooms to facilitate learning and help prepare students for college. TCC students participating in Tulsa Achieves can volunteer with AVID in order to complete part or all of the required 40 community service hours per year.
AVID also offers paid tutor positions through Tulsa Public schools, however paid hours do not count towards community service requirements for TCC students participating in Tulsa Achieves.
There are also volunteer opportunities open to all students.
Students will be assigned to a school which they need to attend twice a week for a minimum of one hour a day.
To apply for an AVID tutor role with Tulsa Public Schools, students must:
- have at least a 2.5 GPA
- have college level proficiency in English and Math
- have good communication skills
- like working with teenagers
- pass an Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI) background check
