Advisory Committees

Each of Tulsa Community College's career and workforce development programs has an Advisory Committee.  An Advisory Committee is a representative group of individuals whose experience and abilities represent a cross section of a particular occupational area.  The primary purpose of TCC's Advisory Committees is to advise educators in the establishment and evaluation of workforce development programs.  These committees serve the needs of students, faculty, and business/industry as well as provide expertise pertaining to technology change.

Each Advisory Committee shall provide leadership and promote the development of its particular program as it relates to and meets the needs of the students, the community, the industry, and the public. 

Committee members shall act as TCC ambassadors to the Tulsa community as well as consultants to the TCC community.

What is an Advisory Committee?
In a nutshell, an Advisory Committee is organized to counsel TCC educators on the workplace. It is composed of individuals primarily outside the educational field with specific industry knowledge and expertise.  These committees help TCC define curriculum based on trends and changes in business, industry, technology, and government.

What do Advisory Committees mean to TCC?
TCC’s Advisory Committees are vital in creating and maintaining current programs for our students.  The advisors play a key role in TCC’s effort to educate the best possible workforce for the Tulsa community.   Because these committees are so important to TCC, the college is currently enhancing the engagement, utilization, and structure of its Advisory Committees.

Why is it important to have Advisory Committees?
Advisory Committees composed of concerned and competent business and industry leaders are the most effective tools for partnering with Tulsa’s business community in education. In addition, TCC must appoint and engage its advisors in order to maintain accreditation standards.  TCC values the practical experience committee members bring to education. 

How many Advisory Committees does TCC have?
Each of TCC’s career and workforce education programs has an Advisory Committee, and there are more than 50 career and workforce education programs at the College. 

How many people are on an Advisory Committee?
The number of members varies.  Each committee strives for a minimum of ten members from business and industry.

What is the composition of an Advisory Committee?
Each committee is composed primarily of industry professionals and partners from other institutions of higher education. TCC faculty members and associate deans also serve on each committee in key supporting roles.

Who should serve as advisors?
Advisors are interested, active professionals from the industries TCC serves.

What are the responsibilities of an advisor?
Advisors are responsible for attending all meetings of the Advisory Committee where the majority of business is conducted.  The member will be asked to guide and approve program curriculum to best meet the needs of employers and students and provide counsel for the faculty about industry environment and developments.

When do the committees meet?
Advisory Committees have two regularly scheduled committee meetings per school year, once during the fall semester and once during the spring semester.  Additional meetings may be scheduled as needed.
