What are career assessments?

Career assessments are an important part of career planning. Assessments help you to explore and clarify your career choices by providing information about YOU and CAREERS. Some people call them "tests", but we prefer to use the word assessments since there are no right or wrong answers. It is important to know that there is not an assessment or program that will decide what you should be. Nor is there a magical answer for determing that. However, assessments and good career information can help you examine your work-values, interests, abilities, and personality type. Once you complete an assessment you will begin to have a better understanding for the career areas that correspond with your personal preferences. This information will assist you with making informed career decisions.

The following describes many of our career assessments and resources some of which will require contacting a career counselor to obtain a password.
 

ACT's DISCOVER is an internet-based career guidance and information system designed for education and career planning. DISCOVER includes: interests, abilities, and values assessments; databases of occupations, schools and training institutions, scholarships, majors, and military options; and job preparation activities such as resume and cover letter development, and interviewing skills. Current students may contact a career planning staff member for a User ID.
 

Career Abilities Placement Survey (CAPS) consists of a battery of eight ability tests including mechanical reasoning, spatial relations, verbal reasoning, numerical ability, language usage, work knowledge, perceptual speed and accuracy, and manual speed and dexterity. Results are profiled into occupational clusters. Only available on campus.
 

College Central Network is TCC Career Services job listing software that enables you to access information on thousands of available jobs, either locally or nationwide via the web.
 

OKCareerPlanner.com is brought to you by the Governor's Council for Workforce and Economic Development. Content includes:  career and educational planning, job hunting, and starting a business. No password is required.
 

The Holland Self-Directed Search is a paper interest inventory that will aid you in grouping your interests into possible occupational themes to explore.
 

The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is one of the most popular personality instruments in the world today. The MBTI was created to help people understand personal differences and appreciate the value of those differences. the MBTI is frequently used as a tool in career development, personal counseling, team building, leadership training, and conflict resolution. Check with the campus of your choice for specific availability.
 

OKCIS (Oklahoma Career Information System) can give you information about work, education and training, financial aid and much more! It is written for Oklahoma students and adults. Please contact a career counselor for a login and user name. Internet accessible.

OKJobMatch searches more than 16,000 websites, matching you with the right job opportunities in all of Oklahoma's 77 counties and neighboring states.  All at zero cost to you. OKJobMatch.com is a joint project of the workforce system partners in the State of Oklahoma.  The project is led by the Oklahoma Department of Commerce.
 

The System of Interactive Guidance and Information (SIGI 3) is a comprehensive, interactive software program that focuses on career decision-making strategies based on work-related values, particularly helpful for the career changer. Access SIGI3 at MyTCC and click on the Student Life tab, look for the Career Services box, and click on SIGI3. Password not required, but you must be a current TCC student to access it.
 

TypeFocus Careers is a program designed to help you make wise career choices by learning about your personality type and what it means to you. TypeFocus helps you determine your own unique "personality type" and it incorporates those results into 3 personalized career reports. These reports offer insight into self awareness that promotes wise decisions about important topics relating to you and your career. Current students may contact a career planning staff member for a site password. Internet accessible.
 

What Can I Do With This Major? offers information on numerous college majors.
 

The Career Services Staff provide career guidance through interpreting assessment results, assisting with information gathering, providing support in decision making and goal setting, and making referrals to other helpful resources. These resources include academic advisement for educational planning.
