Call for Veterans and Artists: Back Home

Submission Deadline: Tuesday, September 3, 2019 at 5 pm

Location: McKeon Center for Creativity in downtown Tulsa; more locations may be announced
Exhibition Dates: December 4, 2019 – January 29, 2020

Veterans, service members, or family members of deceased veterans (from WW II forward) are invited to submit photographs relating to and exemplifying their time in service and their return to civilian status. This may include photographs from the actual theater in which one was stationed, or photos that show the transition back to civilian life. Photos must be accompanied by a two or three sentence description of the scene in the picture, and/or of the soldier’s thoughts, actions, triumphs, or challenges. The goal of the exhibition is to honor veterans and to give non-veterans a glimpse into the sacrifices made by veterans.

This exhibit is in conjunction with TCC’s 2019-2020 common book program made possible in part by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities: Humanities Initiatives at Community Colleges.

CONSIDERATIONS

Each veteran’s work selected for the exhibit will be on loan for at least a year. The Coffee Bunker is collaborating with TCC on this endeavor and would like to have the possibility of displaying the artwork in other locations after the initial exhibit in the Center for Creativity. All exhibitions are deemed at the participant’s own risk.

SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS

Each veteran/veteran’s family may submit up to three pieces for consideration, and submissions must include:

-submitter’s full name, phone number, mailing address, and email address

-veteran’s full name (if different from submitter)

-veteran’s dates and location(s) of service
-title of photo (or “untitled”)
-location and date photo was taken, if known

Works may be submitted in person to Barbara Scruggs at the Coffee Bunker, 6365 E 41st St, Tulsa, (918) 406 – 6360 OR digitally to Kara Ryan-Johnson (kara.ryan-johnson@tulsacc.edu). Digital submissions must be a high-resolution JPG image at least 300 dpi. Photos taken with a modern smartphone are acceptable; photos pulled from the Internet are not.
