2019 Benefits Open Enrollment Begins Soon

September 25, 2018

TCC will be changing insurance providers January 1, 2019, from Aetna to Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS).

The TCC benefits committee selected BCBS based on a proposal that included lower premiums for our employees and the College, as well as an often-requested HMO option for employees. Aetna planned to raise premiums by 9 percent for 2019. The three new plan options from BCBS will provide lower premium options for dependent coverage.

“The committee reviewed proposals from several carriers and BlueCross BlueShield rose to the top in part because of the HMO option,” says Jeff Owens, TCC assistant director of human resources. “After we left the state benefit plan(s), many employees have requested we provide an HMO option.”

Vision insurance will also be changing, from VSP to MetLife. Owens says MetLife has a broader network with more options. Employees will also receive a vision benefits card. TCC’s dental insurance carrier will not be changing.

Owens reminds employees they are required to update their medical or dependent flex accounts each year as the amounts selected in the prior year are not carried over from year-to-year.

The open enrollment process begins October 15 and meetings will be hosted on each campus. Employees are strongly encouraged to attend the meetings as all employees will be required login to MyTCC to make changes or select the benefit options they prefer.

The deadline to enroll is October 26, 2019. “If employees do not log in to enroll in their benefit option,” says Owens, “they will be enrolled in the base plan for both medical and dental insurance.”

The HR department has meetings planned the week of October 15th on each campus to update TCC Faculty and Staff about the new benefit plans and enrollment process.
