It’s common for students to graduate with several degrees at one time. However, James graduated with five associate degrees with honors within a 22-month period from Tulsa Community College.

“I attended TCC with the goal of undertaking a heavy workload to simulate the demands of pharmacy school,” he said. “TCC offered me flexibility in campuses, schedules, online and even self-taught courses to accomplish my goals and, for that, I am forever grateful.”

While at TCC, one of James’ Academic Advisors made a big impression on him. “One day, while waiting for my guidance counselor, I saw Suzanne Pickering, now Senior Academic Advisor. As she met with each student, she displayed genuine interest in each one. I told the desk attendant that no matter how long I needed to wait, I only wanted to see her that day. She showed such care, compassion, patience and sincerity in helping me navigate my course load. Over the years, she trusted my judgment and helped me gain the necessary approvals. Each semester, we would discuss my plan. Her input has proven invaluable.”

James went on to receive his Doctor of Pharmacy degree and joined Walmart as a Pharmacy Manager, where he received his division’s Pharmacy of the Year award in 2016. In his current role as a Market Health and Wellness Director, he is responsible for 12 Walmart pharmacies, 40 pharmacists and more than 100 pharmacy technicians and support staff providing patient care across Oklahoma, Texas and Arkansas.

Outside of work, James has served as a speaker at the North Texas Juneteenth celebrations. He has also helped to sponsor Minorities in Medicine and he is currently serving on the CAP Tulsa Health Advisory Committee.
