The production of “Two Gentlemen of Verona” by the Tulsa Community College Theatre Department is far removed from your typical Shakespearian play. This modern updated version is more like the 1965 movie, “Beach Blanket Bingo” and takes place on a pier with a beach setting complete with shorts, leis and coconuts. Even the language is updated on this light-hearted comedy where true love ultimately prevails through deception, lust and youthful ignorance.

Guest Director Rena Cook assembles a young and talented cast of TCC theatre majors for this whimsical spin on Shakespeare’s “Two Gentlemen of Verona.” Cook is also a Voice and Diction Professor at TCC.

“We thought a little sand with our Shakespeare would be fun for this updated production. The cast and crew are hungry to learn and the rehearsal process has been joyful, which is not always the case with the long hours,” said Cook. “I know people will be entertained with this production, whether they think they like Shakespeare or not.”

Performances are 8 p.m., November 11, 12, 17, 18 & 19 and 2 p.m., November 13 & 20 at the VanTrease Performing Arts Center for Education Studio Theatre, 10300 E. 81st Street on the TCC Southeast Campus.

Tickets for all performances are $10 adults, $8 seniors, and $6 students and can be purchased at the VanTrease Performing Arts Center for Education (PACE) ticket office. Student rush tickets are available one hour before performance for $3.
