Tulsa Community College’s Academic Success Coaching program received the Program of Promise Award from the National Organization for Student Success.

Tulsa Community College celebrated national recognition of its Academic Success Coaching program with the campus community in April, following the program’s recent honor from the National Organization for Student Success.

The Program of Promise Award was presented to TCC at the NOSS 50th annual conference in New York City. NOSS seeks to recognize programs that are using effective or promising practices to promote student success and development.

Launched in Fall 2016, TCC’s Academic Success Coaching program connects students with trained coaches who provide individualized support for academic success, life balance, and leadership development.

The program includes six coaches who serve approximately 2,100 students each year.

“Our coaches work one-on-one with students to strengthen time management, study strategies, and goal setting,” said Dewayne Dickens, Ph.D., Senior Director of the Center for Community & Learning, who oversees the Academic Success Coaches. “They also help students address everyday challenges that may often derail their college progress.”

Benefits for students who utilize Academic Success Coaching include acclimation to the college environment, along with increased empowerment, independence, self-accountability, networking opportunities, and a stronger sense of confidence as they navigate their academic careers.

“Academic Success Coaching helps students recognize their potential for success,” said TCC Student Resource Coach Douglas Allen. “Success starts with a plan and grows through consistent action. With the right tools, guidance, and determination, every student can exceed expectations and achieve their goals. It’s incredibly rewarding to help students not only earn their degrees but also recognize their full potential.”

Dickens and Allen traveled to New York City to accept the award from NOSS in February.

“Being recognized by NOSS affirms the intentional work our team does every day,” said Dickens. “When students receive personalized support, success becomes not just possible but expected.”
