Please Touch The Art

Please Touch the Art breaks the rules of traditional art exhibits and makes art accessible, especially for visitors who are visually impaired. Guests are encouraged to touch the art and explore the exhibit using a variety of senses. Please Touch the Art is June 3-July 30 in the Tulsa Community College Thomas K. McKeon Center for Creativity on the TCC Metro Campus.
Interactive exhibit features sound, scent, sculpture and installation
12 Oklahoma artists, including two who are blind, have created new work for the exhibition in a wide range of media, including sound, scent, sculpture, installation, and more. Most of the artwork can be touched, while others feature high-contrast imagery or interactive components.
During the exhibition, special programs will complement the exhibit and encourage visitors with all ranges of abilities to experience the arts. John Bramblitt, an artist who is blind from Denton, Texas, will be an artist-in-residence June 6 - 8. He will present a free artist talk and demonstration at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 7 in the Center for Creativity. Additionally, he will present a free art workshop from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Wednesday, June 8 in which participants will be blindfolded in order to better understand Bramblitt’s artistic process. Everyone is welcome to attend these events.
The opening night reception is 5 p.m. - 9 p.m. Friday, June 3 and held in conjunction with the Brady District First Friday Art Crawl. Visitors can experience the show and meet TCC student Daniel Brookshire, an artist who is blind. Daniel will demonstrate his techniques for creating art and answer visitors’ questions. Additionally, a hands-on activity will allow visitors to become part of the exhibit by having their voices recorded by artist Mark Wittig. Those recordings will become a sound component of Mark’s art installation. Light refreshments will be served, with free parking in TCC lots and free limo bus rides to and from the Brady Arts District.
