College Students and Substance Abuse

College students make up one of the largest groups of drug users nationwide. Stress, course load, curiosity, and peer pressure are all reasons college students might use drugs and alcohol.

Studies by the Journal of the American Medical Association show that alcohol and substance abuse are closely linked with anxiety and depression. Drugs and alcohol are often used to self-medicate and ease the symptoms of undiagnosed mental health issues, often leading to even worse symptoms.

ULifeline offers confidential self-screening tools and information for 4 of the most common mental health conditions that college students face. If a person screens positive for a disorder, it does not mean that they have that diagnosis; it means that they should follow up with a physician or mental health provider for further evaluation.

The Oklahoma Network of Care is provided by the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services. This Web site is a resource for individuals, families and agencies concerned with mental health and substance abuse. Palmer

Palmer offers outpatient substance abuse programs for adults and adolescents. Palmer also offers a woman’s residential treatment program (children 12 & under are able to stay with their mother). All programs are at no cost to the participant.

Alcoholics Anonymous (for friends or family of alcoholics)

Al‑Anon is a mutual support program for people whose lives have been affected by someone else’s drinking. By sharing common experiences and applying the Al-Anon principles, families and friends of alcoholics can bring positive changes to their individual situations, whether or not the alcoholic admits the existence of a drinking problem or seeks help.

Naloxone -Opioid Overdose Treatment

Naloxone is a medication used to reverse the effects of opioid overdose. Specifically, naloxone allows an overdose victim to breathe normally. It is not addictive and cannot be abused.

You should consider having Naloxone if you or someone you care about:

Uses alcohol, benzodiazepines, or muscle relaxers with opioids
Has liver, kidney or breathing problems
Uses illicit opioids such as heroine or fentanyl.
Are concerned that someone close to you may overdose.
